Privacy Policy
Effective July 3, 2026
Otter Money exists to show you an honest picture of your own money. That only works if you can trust us with it, so this policy is written to be read, not skimmed past.
What we collect
- Your email address and password, to create and secure your account. Passwords are stored only as salted hashes.
- Financial account data you choose to connect: balances, holdings, and transactions, retrieved through our connection partners (Plaid and SnapTrade) or imported by you via CSV or manual entry.
- Asset details you add, such as a vehicle VIN, used solely to look up that vehicle's market value.
What we never collect
- Your bank credentials. When you link an account you authenticate directly with your institution through Plaid or SnapTrade. Your banking username and password never touch Otter Money's servers.
- Your contacts, location, or advertising identifiers.
How your data is protected
- All traffic is encrypted in transit with TLS.
- Provider access tokens are additionally encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM before they are stored.
- Every request to your data is scoped to your authenticated account.
What we do with it
We use your data to run the app for you: showing balances, computing your net worth history, categorizing transactions, and valuing your assets. That's it.
- We do not sell your data. Ever.
- We do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
- We share it only with the service providers required to operate the app (such as Plaid and SnapTrade for account connections), and only to the extent needed to provide the service you asked for.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account at any time from inside the app. Deletion removes your account and associated financial data from our systems. You can also export your data (CSV) first. It's yours.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so plainly on this page and update the date above.
